Scoria The Knitter Issue 46.

My latest design called Scoria can now be seen in The Knitter Magazine issue 46. Also, there is a beautiful pattern by the world famous Japanese knitter, Hitomi Shida. It’s called Tranquil Garden and I translated the pattern from Japanese to English. On this post I will talk about Scoria.

The Knitter, issue 46, Scoria by Kyoko Nakayoshi

I wanted to make a garment which is feminine but slightly mysterious. Scrumptious 4ply Sport in Cherry by Fyberspates (45% silk and 55% superwash merino was a perfect choice. I do think the composition of the yarn as much as its colour determine the personality of the finished garment.

The garment is inspired by moving volcanic lava and contrasting rocks. I used delicate lace edging for the hem and herringbone stitch for this. It is an unusual structure for Cotton & Cloud because the garment is worked in flat knitting. This is because the lace and the herringbone pattern were best worked flat.

Another feature of this garment is the biased and twisted neckband. It’s made by knitting diagonally, then forcing the piece to stay straight.

When you attach this piece around the neck edge, it will look like this:

Fyberspates The Scrumptious Baby Collection

It has been an amazing week for Cotton & Cloud because 2 baby knitting patterns I designed for Fybersates are now in print in The Scrumptious Baby Collection! So exciting!!

Fyberspates Scrumptious Babies

The book is a collection of really great patterns designed by Judy Furlong, Belinda Boaden, Mélanie Edgar and myself. Superb editing by Jen Arnal-Culliford. :D I am just so honoured to be apart of an amazing knitting team!!!!!!

Two patterns I have contributed are Temari Kimono Jacket and Kaelyn Cardigan and Hat:

Temari Kimono Jacket

Temari Kimono Jacket

Temari is a traditional Japanese playing balls. I wanted to portray these magical and playful feel to the baby garment. The pattern is made of 3 stitch cables but you can actually work without using the cable needles (like when you work the 2-stitch cables) if you wish. The top part is worked first and is knitted horizontally. Stitches around the chest is then picked and knitted to work top-down. The outer flap is fixed with a button (make sure you use the nicest and cutest ever button for this! – I used a lovely green vintage button for the yellow version). Inside flap is fixed with a chain-stitch string.

Temari

What’s more amazing is that this Temari pattern has been one of the most popular patterns on Ravelry when it came out. So I was gobsmacked and super chuffed! Check it out!

Kaelyn Cardigan and Hat

Kaelyn Cardigan and HatKaelyn cardigan and a matching hat is inspired by flowers and woods like in Alice in Wonderland. The garment is knitted bottom-up starting with a mini-scallop edges. The bobbles you can see in the photo is actually a flower head (you can see it clearly on the lighter version below, knitted by Kim – Thank you so much, it’s beautiful!) and you would work the leaves by drawing the stitches from rows below. The main body is worked with yarn-over polka dot patterns.

All the designs uses Fyberspates Scrumptious yarn (4 ply Sport & Lace). It’s a really lovely an “kind” and soft yarn to knit with – I am not just saying it because I contributed to the book. I really think it’s a wonderful yarn. You can hand-wash it with no problem ;) The yarn is available from various stockist around the world. The US distributor is Lantern Moon.

Happy baby knitting!

Have you knitted with Fyberspates’ Scrumptious yarn yet? You won’t regret it! ;) Last Saturday, Mary and I attended Fyberspates’ Scrumptious Collection Launch party.

The party was held at Dancing Hen’s Studio. When we arrived, there were already many people there. There were people from The Knitter magazine and many accomplished knitters who I so wanted to meet for a long time! It was truly an amazing day for me.

Jeni, the person behind Fyberspates.

It was lovely to meet Jeni. She is so nice and is the kind of person who is really fun to chat with. And of course she is passionate about her yarn.

This pair of gloes are so well-thought design. I tried it on at the party and it felt so nice.

Hinksey - designed by Lily France

There are 20 patterns in the book; 4 patterns each for lace, 4ply, dk, aran and chunky weight. Usually if I find a couple of patterns that I like in a book, that is considered as a good book (a bit like a music album). I was so impressed to find many designs that I would definitely knit in this pattern. I guarantee you would love the book.

Arncott - designed by Jen Arnall-Culliford

The designs are feminine, yet not too girly. I could see they were all carefully chosen and designed for knit-ability, wear-ability and practicality.

I love the fact that the book is created by people who are all passionate about knitting. The patterns are all well written and Technical Editing was carried out by Jen Arnall Culliford (JenACKnitwear) who also designed some of the garment and is a pro.

I tried some of the garments and fell in love with them.
