Scoria The Knitter Issue 46.

My latest design called Scoria can now be seen in The Knitter Magazine issue 46. Also, there is a beautiful pattern by the world famous Japanese knitter, Hitomi Shida. It’s called Tranquil Garden and I translated the pattern from Japanese to English. On this post I will talk about Scoria.

The Knitter, issue 46, Scoria by Kyoko Nakayoshi

I wanted to make a garment which is feminine but slightly mysterious. Scrumptious 4ply Sport in Cherry by Fyberspates (45% silk and 55% superwash merino was a perfect choice. I do think the composition of the yarn as much as its colour determine the personality of the finished garment.

The garment is inspired by moving volcanic lava and contrasting rocks. I used delicate lace edging for the hem and herringbone stitch for this. It is an unusual structure for Cotton & Cloud because the garment is worked in flat knitting. This is because the lace and the herringbone pattern were best worked flat.

Another feature of this garment is the biased and twisted neckband. It’s made by knitting diagonally, then forcing the piece to stay straight.

When you attach this piece around the neck edge, it will look like this:
