ABOUT US

Cotton & Cloud Logo

Cotton & Cloud helps busy knitters around the world who are long on ideas but short on time.

We create knitting patterns that are seamless, with many time-saving features that won't compromise on the aesthetic of the design. Our patterns also come with lots of photo instructions and images to make them helpful for knitters, so you won't have to spend unnecessary time trying to figure out or sew up the pieces.

This means that you can complete your project quickly and maximise your enjoyment of knitting!!

OUR COMMITMENT TO THE ENVIRONMENT

We want to reflect our love for wildlife in all aspects of our business by promoting ethical and green crafting as much as possible.

PATTERNS

We create knitting patterns with ethical, green yarns. We are lucky enough to be sponsored by the Scottish yarn producer, Jamieson's of Shetland. This allows us to use their locally produced Shetland yarns for our patterns.

Many of our patterns have design features that depict the environment with a short story behind them. We want our patterns to be as meaningful as they are fun to knit.

To save trees all our patterns are downloadable.

SUPPLIES

To promote ethical and green crafting it is our responsibility to stock craft supplies that have a low environmental impact. It is our responsibility to give customers a choice by providing them with as much information as possible about our products.

We make sure to prioritise sourcing earth-friendly yarns and craft supplies.

For mass-produced items, we try to work with companies that share our values of integrity and environmentalism. Sometimes this is difficult for a small business like ours, so we do our best to find out about the origin of the products in an effort to understand the social and environmental impact of our supply chain.

LIFESTYLE

Cotton & Cloud takes a holistic approach to running its business with environmental and social responsibility.

We are a member of the WWF-World Wide Fund For Nature business club and often participate in charity runs to raise money.

We also work with generous crafters who donate their unused fabrics and knitting yarns for us to sell and raise money for charity. Information about "fabrics and yarns for charity" can be found here.

Throughout the year we collect used postage stamps and donate them every Christmas to charities which put them on auction for fund-raising.

JAPANESE KNITTING IN THE WEST

Kyoko Nakayoshi

Kyoko learnt to knit at the age of 7 while growing up in Japan. By the age of 14, she was knitting with knitting patterns written in both English and Japanese. Some of her work includes translating patterns from Japanese to English. She also has experience working as a freelance translator.

With thorough understanding of both Japanese and English knitting pattern writing styles, Kyoko is able to help knitters who have difficulty finding or using Japanese knitting books.

At Cotton & Cloud, we stock Japanese knitting books, but not just any books.
We concentrate on books that are easy to understand even if you can't read Japanese. At the same time, we make sure they are worth having on your bookshelf.
This means that the books we stock are not just an inspiration but also something you will find useful.

BRIEF HISTORY

Established in 2006, we started by selling original handmade goods, downloadable craft patterns and kits. In 2009, we thought, “wouldn’t it be nice if we could change the world for the better by doing something that we really love?” .

So we decided to develop the theme of “crafting a difference”. This means that whatever we do in our business, it will be centred around making a positive social and environmental impact.
